Personality test for accountants released as recruiting tool

Candidate assessment services company Accountests announced the release of its new Accountants Personality Profile Questionnaire, which firms can use to assess possible new hires in terms of personal behaviors and characteristics. The company based its tests on a study of about 300 accountants in the U.S., U.K., New Zealand and Australia.

The test, which takes about 20 minutes to complete, is designed to examine accounting-specific challenges in realms like ethics, relationship-building, adding value and coping with stress, especially as it pertains to changing accounting roles and client expectations. Upon completing the test, a report is generated that includes automatically populated interview questions and career development plans.

With these, according to Accountests director Steve Evans, firms can evaluate whether someone is more of a “back-room number cruncher” or “strategic business advisor.”

“Today's accountant needs to offer vision and creative thinking and a much broader repertoire of skills, and is no longer just responsible for maintaining accounts and finances; now, they need a broader set of business skills, as a trusted strategic business advisor,” he said in a statement.

The company said that the test builds on a 2016 study from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants that went into the kinds of skills accountants will need in a changing world, including creative and emotional intelligence, technical skills and ethical foundations, digital fluency, and vision and experience. The new test assesses candidates on these features and more.
