Aprio merges in Magoon, Freeman, Spain & Jones

Aprio LLP, a Top 100 Firm based in Atlanta, is expanding its presence in Georgia by adding Alpharetta-based Magoon, Freeman, Spain & Jones LLC, effective Sept. 1, 2018.

The combination will add more than 15 people from MFSJ to Aprio, including five partners and 14 staff members. They will continue to work from their offices in Alpharetta, a suburb of Atlanta. The combination is expected to grow Aprio’s Atlanta footprint by adding an office in North Fulton County and increase the firm’s retirement plan business by 15 percent.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Aprio ranked No. 51 on Accounting Today’s 2018 list of the Top 100 Firms, with $85.13 million in annual revenue.

MFSJ has been operating for more than 40 years, serving closely held businesses, nonprofits and individual clients.

“This combination will allow the MFSJ team to take advantage of our investments in business process automation, data analytics, as well as increased opportunities for skills building and career development through Aprio University,” said Aprio CEO and managing partner Richard Kopelman in a statement.

MFSJ sees benefits to its clients from the combination with Aprio, as well as expanded services.

“Our existing clients will benefit from Aprio’s unmatched breadth of services,” said MFSJ managing partner Joe Spain in a statement. “Aprio’s reputation is well-established for providing clients with future-focused advice and we’re delighted about the combination of the firms.”

Aprio changed its name last year from Habif, Arogeti & Wynne, and was founded 1952. This is the third M&A deal it has announced this year, and the sixth transaction in Georgia since 2007. In June, the firm signed an agreement to acquire HPC, a cloud-based accounting firm that services clients online.

Adamson Advisory CEO Gary Adamson advised both firms on the merger. “This combination helps extend Aprio’s reach and leadership serving entrepreneurial clients in the Atlanta market,” he stated. “MFSJ has been a leader in the North Atlanta market for many years and was attracted to Aprio’s outstanding talent pool and extensive range of services focused on the middle market.”
