Data finds accountants most productive on Tuesday

Did you have a productive day yesterday? If so, you're not alone. Recent data has found that Tuesday is the most productive day for accountants and Friday the least, at least in terms of the work week.

The data comes from the accounting automation solutions provider Numeric. The company was able to track this data because accountants submit "tasks" through the software, which produces data that can be analyzed by experts there. Broken down by specific days:

  • 21.4% of tasks are completed Monday;
  • 25.2% of tasks are completed Tuesday;
  • 14.4% of tasks are completed Wednesday;
  • 24.7% of tasks are completed Thursday;
  • 11.2% of tasks are completed Friday; and
  • 3.1% of tasks are completed over the weekend.

One might speculate that accountants on Monday are coming back from the weekend still needing a little time to get back into the full swing of the work week; on Tuesday they're finishing up the things they may have started the day before or simply delayed until then; on Wednesday they could be recovering from Tuesday; on Thursday they're looking toward the end of the week and don't want to leave things for the weekend; on Friday, like pretty much everyone who works, their productivity lags a little as they look forward to Saturday; and on weekends, there is a small proportion of accountants who still had leftover tasks from earlier that they're looking to get done as soon as they can.
The data also found that, unfortunately, many accountants are working rather late. While 18% of tasks are completed before 10 a.m., the proportion of tasks completed after 7 p.m. is nearly twice that, at 34%. It also found that few accountants are getting ahead of their work: only 3.3% of tasks are completed three or more days ahead of their due date.

"In summary — it appears accountants are completing the highest volume of tasks on Tuesdays with a fair share of tasks completed after 7:00 p.m.," said the report.
