EO Plans More Audits

Washington (Sept. 25, 2002) -- The Internal Revenue Service Exempt Organizations Division intends to conduct more examinations of exempt organizations next year.Under new Implementing Guidelines, just released for fiscal year 2003, a key initiative for EO will be to improve its presence in the community "by conducting more examinations using techniques requiring fewer resources, such as limited scope audits and office correspondence examinations; acquiring additional research materials; and transitioning from the current EO Coordinated Examination Program to the Team Examination Program."

EO expects that early in FY 2003 the entire determination program will be transferred from Examinations to Rulings and Agreements. All remaining technical resources in EO Examinations will be dedicated to the examination program and customer education and outreach.

As part of an additional key initiative, EO will partner with Electronic Tax Administration, Large and Mid-Size Business, and Modernization, Information Technology and Security Services to develop Form 990 electronic filing.
