EY names Young Tax Professional of the Year

Big Four firm Ernst & Young announced that Urja Maloo of India has been named this year's Young Tax Professional of the Year at the global final competition, held in Dubai.

Now in its 11th year, the competition aims to highlight rising professionals who are “demonstrating the EY organization’s commitment to the future of the profession and the next generation of tax leaders.” This year’s program included 43 winners from different countries who were selected to participate in the global competition.

Maloo was chosen from a short list of 10 to win. Matteo Lamaro of Italy won second place and Global Delivery Services’ Gustav Sanchez won third place.

“The entrants to the EY Young Tax Professional of the Year competition continue to impress me year after year, and our top 10 finalists this year are no exception,” said Kate Barton, EY Global vice chair of tax, in a statement. “A huge congratulations, in particular, to this year’s overall winner Urja Maloo and our runners-up Matteo Lamaro and Gustav Sanchez.”

This year’s competition centered on sustainability, with finalists asked to present their ideas on how tax can spur sustainability options in the business world. Competitors presented their ideas to a panel of judges consisting of various EY leaders and Clodagh Power of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD) Center for Tax Policy Administration.

“Sustainability is a crucial issue that is very close to the hearts of these finalists,” said Jennifer Wishnie, EY Global tax talent leader and EY Young Tax Professional of the Year sponsor, in a statement. “Their ideas explored how tax can help us build a more sustainable world, through reinforcing green initiatives, promoting diversity and equality, and strengthening business transparency.”

“I am honored to be named this year’s EY Young Tax Professional of the Year winner,” Maloo said in a statement. “The global final was an incredible experience, and it was wonderful to have the opportunity to share my ideas and learn from some of the most renowned leaders in the profession. Tax plays such a fundamental role in our world, and I am excited about the future that lies ahead.”
