FICPA events support victims of Hurricane Ian

The Florida Institute of CPAs held a disaster recovery event on Nov. 28 at Fort Myers accounting firm Stroemer and Co. to support people affected by Hurricane Ian.

American Institute of CPAs chair Anoop Mehta was on hand, as were representatives of the AICPA's Benevolent Fund, which assisted members who wanted to apply for short-term financial relief. Representatives of the Internal Revenue Service were also at the event to provide storm-related information about tax-filing deadline extensions..

"During the past few weeks, our thoughts and prayers have been with everyone who is recovering from Hurricane Ian," said FICPA president and CEO Shelly Weir in a statement. "This time has proven especially challenging as our members assist clients in navigating deadline extensions and casualty and property loss issues, while they address damage and loss of their own."

FICPA

It's not the first time the FICPA has assisted victims of Hurricane Ian. The organization also organized a members-only webinar in October to provide updates and discuss Florida's ongoing efforts to recover from the disaster, and that same month, Weir submitted a formal request to the Florida Department of Revenue to ask for tax relief. FICPA also sent a letter to the acting director of the Department of Treasury's Financial  Crimes Enforcement Network as well.

"Whether our members need support for themselves or guidance on how best to advise their clients, we have them covered," said Weir in a statement. "And we're supported by a larger network of our state society colleagues."
