IMA opens two academic case competitions

The Institute of Management Accountants announced that it is accepting entries for two case competitions for accounting students and academics.

The first, the 2022 Student Case Competition, asks students to “interpret, analyze, evaluate, synthesize and communicate a solution to a management accounting problem.”

The 2022 case was penned by Junaitha Gaffor and Desi Arisandl. The case asks students to examine a fictitious indoor sports company and determine how to maximize its value for customers.

“We are always looking to breed the next generation of accounting and finance professionals and CMAs and our Student Case Competition helps us to find them,” said Jim Gurowka, senior vice president of global business development at the IMA, in a statement. “We’re excited that this competition has become a global one and look forward to reviewing this year’s submissions.”

The competition comprises six regional competitions and is open to college students around the world. Student teams of three to five participants will compete in the IMA’s regions, with the top four teams from the U.S. competition meeting at the IMA’s Annual Conference in Austin, Texas, where a winner will be declared in June 2022. All finalist team members will receive a Certified Management Accountant scholarship worth over $2,000, travel and hotel expenses to the IMA Annual Conference where the finals will take place, free conference registration, and a team commemorative plaque. The winning team will receive a $4,000 cash prize, with runner-ups receiving a $2,000 cash prize.

Submissions are due Feb. 2, 2022. More information on the 2022 IMA Student Case Competition is available on the IMA's site here.

Separately, the IMA is accepting entries for its 2022 Carl Menconi Ethics Case Writing Competition through Jan. 19, 2022.

Sponsored by the IMA’s Committee on Ethics, the competition seeks top submissions of business ethics-related teaching cases. The competition is open to accounting and finance academics and practitioners, with joint submissions encouraged.

Winners will be featured in the IMA’s flagship publication, Strategic Finance, and the case author or team will be recognized at the IMA’s 2022 Annual Conference & Expo in Austin in June. Winners will receive one free conference registration and a $500 cash prize. Winners will also have the opportunity to adapt their article into a slideshow and present it in an IMA Faculty Friday webcast.

Submissions must focus on business ethics, with a special focus on management accounting and finance issues, and reference the IMA’s Statement of Ethical Professional Practice. Full competition details are available on the IMA’s site here.
