IRS closing some payment lockbox addresses

Ten payment post office boxes for federal taxes (a.k.a. “lockbox addresses”) in San Francisco and Hartford, Connecticut, will completely cease operations on Jan. 1, 2022.

Lockbox addresses are run by banks and financial institutions that deposit taxpayer payments and forward any associated documents to the Internal Revenue Service.

The 10 lockbox sites, which were all associated with Bank of America, ceased operations for the IRS at the end of last year, but will forward all payments to other lockbox sites throughout 2021. P.O. Box addresses for individual taxpayers sending payments to Hartford and San Francisco for 1040s, 4868s, CPs 521/523 and 1040-ES vouchers will be forwarded to lockbox addresses in Louisville, Kentucky, and Cincinnati.

After the Hartford and San Francisco boxes finally close on Jan. 1, 2022, any mail directed to those addresses will be returned to sender.

See Publication 3891, “Lockbox Addresses for 2021” for more.
