IRS Updating Its Transcript Delivery System

Fresh on the heels of a redesign of its Web site, the Internal Revenue Service said Friday it is also updating its Transcript Delivery System.

The new system for delivering tax transcripts will have an updated look and feel, along with new functionality. The implementation date for the new TDS is Oct. 17, 2011.

The IRS acknowledged in an email alert to tax professionals that the changes may present a “learning curve” for some users.

“However, we are certain the improvements will be well worth the minor inconvenience as we strive to offer the best possible service,” said the IRS.

The new system promises to improve the delivery time of tax transcripts containing copies of previously filed tax returns and adjustments. The TDS is also supposed to provide increased capacity to compensate for the growing demand for tax transcripts and reduce the downtime associated with maintenance problems on the older system.

The IRS is previewing highlights of the changes in an online tutorial, which can be accessed on its e-services Registration Services page, or via the toolbar after logging in to e-services, or on the e-services - Online Tools for Tax Professional page.

The IRS warned that the system will be down October 15 and 16 during the implementation period. Users may also experience downtime for the first few days after the Oct. 17 implementation. If problems are encountered in using the new TDS, users can contact the e-help desk at (866) 255-0654.
