LumaTax Gets Seed Funding to Automate Sales Tax Reporting

LumaTax has received $2 million in financing to build out a comprehensive sales tax solution for small businesses.

The inaugural spin-off from Seattle-based Pioneer Square Labs has built a free exemption certificate mobile app, which, in combination with an online solution, automates filing and paying sales tax. The LumaTax products will be available for both small businesses and accountants, and the plan is to roll out in California first.

Later this quarter, LumaTax will offer California-based small businesses a cloud service to complete and file their sales tax returns. The California business tax return is a nine-page document with 15 pages of instructions, and the LumaTax process is designed to translate this into a shorter online experience.

Currently, LumaTax offers a free mobile app on the Apple AppStore and Google Play for businesses to issue verified tax exemption certificates from mobile devices.

Investors include Madrona Venture Group, Greycroft Partners and angel investors.
