New NJCPA scholarships now available for high school and college students

The New Jersey Society of CPAs is now accepting applications for its accounting scholarships

New Jersey high school seniors who intend to major in accounting or pursue a concentration in the field can apply for a $1,500 scholarship. To be eligible, students must obtain a 3.2 GPA, a minimum SAT score of 1260 or a minimum ACT score of 26.

The two-year pilot program funded by Deloitte and the Deloitte Foundation is entering its second year. High school seniors intending to major in accounting or pursue a concentration in the field can apply for the $1,500 Deloitte High School Minority Scholarship. Eligible students must identify as an ethnic minority and currently attend one of the following seven high schools: Rahway High School, New Brunswick High School, West Orange High School, East Side High School, Dickinson High School, Passaic County Technical Institute or Dwight Morrow High School.

Both high school scholarships have an application deadline of Dec. 9, 2022.

"Receiving the scholarship and attending the scholarship award ceremony opened my eyes to the huge network of CPAs that is available to us through the NJCPA," said Henrietta Fuchs, president of the NJCPA Scholarship Fund and a partner at CohnReznick, in a statement. "Being a scholarship recipient and meeting CPAs who spend countless hours giving back to their communities and the younger generation also inspired me early on in my career to volunteer my time and give back."

Accounting students entering their senior year or enrolling in an accounting-related graduate program can apply for a one-year $6,500 scholarship. Candidates must reside in New Jersey, have a GPA of 3.2, and count at least 12 accounting credits by the end of the spring 2023 semester.

New Jersey community college second-year students and college sophomores who wish to continue their education at a four-year institution in the fall can apply for a $2,000 one-year award. Requirements include a 3.2 GPA, a New Jersey residency and at least six accounting credits by the end of the spring 2023 semester.

The application deadline for both college scholarships is Jan. 6, 2023.

"These scholarships could not be possible without the generous donations of our members and member firms," said Ralph Albert Thomas, CEO and executive director of the NJCPA, in a press release. "It's wonderful to be able to communicate the many benefits of this profession with aspiring CPAs and help support them financially."

Thanks to the NJCPA Scholarship Fund, which is funded by members' donations, 2,000 New Jersey students received awards, whose value amounts to more than $7 million since its inception in the 1960s.

Selections will be based on academic performance, standardized test scores, essays and personal interviews. Recipients will be notified in March 2023.
