Withum merges in Freed Maxick

WithumSmith+Brown P.C., a Top 25 Firm based in Princeton, New Jersey, has added Freed Maxick P.C., a Top 100 Firm based in Buffalo, New York, the latest big M&A deal for Withum on the heels of its acquisition in June of PKF Texas.

The deal will expand Withum into upstate and western New York. Withum earned $606 million in annual revenue last year, while Freed Maxick earned over $70 million. Withum, which ranked No. 22 on Accounting Today's 2025 list of the Top 100 Firms, has over 340 partners and principals and approximately 2,700 team members. Freed Maxick, which ranked No. 93, will be adding 36 partners and around 325 team members. They will remain at their current three offices in Buffalo, Rochester and Batavia, New York.

Freed Maxick will offer Withum an expanded health care audit and consulting practice, along with added expertise in financial services, manufacturing, professional services, higher education, not-for-profit, real estate and technology.

In June, Withum acquired PKF Texas, based in Houston, and in April, it added CTM CPAs in Lincolnshire, Illinois. It added BBD LLP in Philadelphia in April 2024; O'Connor & Drew in Braintree, Massachusetts, in 2023; and Martinez & Associates in Winter Springs, Florida, and Martini Partners in Encino, California, in 2022.
