PTIN System Down for Parts of Holiday Season

The Preparer Tax Identification Number system will be down for approximately two to three hours for necessary maintenance beginning at 8 a.m. EST on Monday, Dec. 21, as well as a few days over New Year's.

The system will also be down for end-of-year updates from Thursday, Dec. 31, at 10 p.m. EST until Saturday, Jan. 2, at 12 p.m. EST.

As of November 1, the annual fee for 2016 PTINs was changed to $50 for both new applications and renewals. PTIN open season, which normally began in mid-October, began in early November, when the IRS started accepting renewals and new registrations for the upcoming year.
