The Sales Tax Institute has named Nancy Steele the winner of its 2022 Sales Tax Nerd Award.

"Winning the award validates all the hard work I have undertaken to learn about the crazy and fascinating world of sales tax," Steele said in a statement. "Working in sales tax can be pretty isolating (people tend to back away slowly when I try to explain what I do), so receiving recognition feels amazing."

"From the first time I met Nancy, it was clear to me that she would be someone I wanted to get to know," said STI founder Diane Yetter, in a statement. "Her commitment and passion for learning, as well as making sales tax easier for her company, was just so clear! I'm thrilled to present this award to her this year and know she wear the title loudly and proudly!"

Steele will receive a scholarship for an STI course, a one-year membership to its Sales Tax Nerd Community, a year of mentorship with Yetter, and a prize package of sales tax nerd merchandise.

The 2022 finalists include:

  • Krista Clayton, tax manager for indirect tax at Reyes Holdings;
  • Rebecca Floyd, staff accountant for indirect tax at Carvana;
  • Xhulia Mulla, senior accountant at Turner Construction;
  • Wendy Shaw, tax government and compliance manager at Hill Petroleum; and,
