Senate Mulls SEC Confirmation Hearings

Senate lawmakers indicated they could hold confirmation hearings as early as next week for nominees to the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The Senate Banking Committee said it has planned hearings for July 26 on pending SEC nominees -- just prior to the Senate's August recess.

President Bush has nominated Rep. Christopher Cox., R-Calif., as SEC chair,  succeeding William Donaldson who stepped down June 30.

However, Senate Democrats led by Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., want Bush to give current SEC commissioner Roel Campos a second, five-year term and tap current SEC market regulation division director Annette Nazareth to fill the soon-to-be-vacated commissioner seat of Harvey Goldschmid, who will leave the regulator to teach at Columbia Law School.
