Surgent adds gamified CE course

Surgent Accounting & Financial Education launched Max the Tax, the first entry in a series of Surgent Interactive products focused on gamified online courses. The courses offer accounting, tax and financial professionals to earn continuing education credit while they learn.

In Max the Tax, users play an IRS agent interviewing various taxpayers and adjusting their returns based on their answers. Users earn a score based on the quality of their interview and the adjustments they made. Once the course is completed, users take a final exam to earn real-life CE credit.

"We have a learner-first philosophy and Max the Tax is a perfect example of our commitment to creating innovative, high-impact educational experiences," said Surgent executive vice president Liz Kolar in a statement. "With most CE courses, the learner passively consumes the material they're being taught. Surgent Interactive courses engage learners in various tasks and challenges, which stimulates critical thinking and increases knowledge retention."

The Max the Tax series focuses on 1040 items, Schedule C and other common deduction areas. The course is accredited by the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy and the IRS, and is aimed at CPAs, Enrolled Agents and other tax preparation professionals. The courses are meant to serve professionals at all stages in their careers, especially as a refresher during tax season.

"Accounting and finance professionals are incredibly busy, especially this time of year, and we want to give them options to create their own personal learning journey," added Kolar.

A one-credit Max the Tax course costs $29. Users have one year from their date of purchase to take the course and earn their CE credit. A subscription model will also be available as more courses are gradually added to Surgent Interactive.
