Tax Season Essentials: IRS Changes Service Centers for Four States

Taxpayers in Delaware, Illinois, New York and Rhode Island who file paper returns will be sending them to different Internal Revenue Service centers this year.

Delaware, New York and Rhode Island taxpayers will now have to send their returns to the IRS's Kansas City, Mo., service center. Illinois taxpayers will have to send their returns to the service center in Fresno, Calif.

The IRS said it was making the changes because it continuously monitors the workflow at its service centers and makes adjustments by altering the volume of returns sent to each center. The changes apply only to paper-based returns and won't affect taxpayers who file electronically.

The IRS will include labels in the tax packets it mails out with the appropriate addresses. Taxpayers who do not receive a package and need the service center address should refer to the back cover of the instructions to Forms 1040, 1040A and 1040EZ.
