Tomorrow's News

We love talking about Gen Y and the workplace and the trials and tribulations of younger workers. A new study released by Johnson Controls in Milwaukee looks at what Millennials are looking for when they enter the workforce. And while it may not dispel any myths, it does offer a better understanding of what they expect out of employers.

Since February 2008, the survey has elicited answers from 5,000 students at universities worldwide and employees from a range of professions.

Gen Y is described as flexible, mobile, collaborative and unconventional. They value sustainability - 96 percent of them want an environmentally aware workplace - and 79 percent of them prefer to be mobile, rather than static, workers. Women of that age group were found to prefer more flexibility than men, but here's a kicker - the survey found that those in the 46-to-55-year-old age group are the ones who preferred the most flexible working arrangements.

The survey also found that Millennials are high-maintenance when it comes to facilities management - the actual building in which they are working. Younger workers take into account the type of workplace and its location when considering a potential employer, and how it looks aesthetically matters to them. So no fake plants. And that art you think looks great on the walls? Keep it to a minimum, according to these survey respondents. They also want their own desk. In case you were wondering, the décor should be "modern," rather than "contemporary."

Not surprisingly, Millennials choose a company for the opportunities it offers for learning, and the quality of life and work colleagues. And maybe for the design of the conference room.
