Tomorrow's News

We officially crowned a Ms. July -- and are on the hunt for a Mr. or Ms. August, September, October and beyond. Our inaugural Accountant of the Month contest via our Accounting Today Facebook page (www.facebook.com/accountingtoday) was very successful, courting submissions from CPAs with hobbies ranging from band drummer to Olympic athlete.

Our winner, Darlene Finzer, works the pit crew for her nephew's go-kart races and tends to a farm of more than 50 donkeys, which presented me with a unique learning opportunity on June 28 when, while the rest of our staff was analyzing the ramifications of the Supreme Court's historic decision on the Affordable Health Care Act, I was learning the key differences between male and female donkeys.

And I found that, and my entire profile interview with Darlene, very interesting. I know all of us at Accounting Today are intrigued by the passions and activities of our readership outside their professional lives, and we've discovered just how easy it is to rustle up a whole crew of accountants to debunk the classic stereotypes.

That's what sparked the idea for the contest. We hope you will continue to enter yourselves -- or a friend or colleague -- for consideration. Not only does it expand the traditional thinking about bean counters, it gives me an opportunity to selfishly expand my knowledge base.

Which, in case you were wondering, now includes the fact that female donkeys, known as jennies, are preferred for their ability to herd cattle, while male donkeys -- jacks -- are not.

Darlene's animal-minded interests earned her a free pass to our annual Growth & Profitability Summit in October and a caricature of her on her farm. What would your picture include? Dig around and post it to our Facebook page! And then hopefully you and I can have ourselves a little chat.
