Webcast Focuses on New Tax Preparer Standards

The Tax Governance Institute plans to host a video Webcast on the new tax preparer standards on Jan. 15 from 1 pm to 2:30 pm EST.

A 2007 law raises the return preparation standard for undisclosed positions reported on any federal tax return and imposes a larger penalty on tax-return preparers who fail to meet the higher standard. Uncertainty about the definition of a "tax-return preparer" also makes the scope of the legislation potentially unclear.

The Webcast will focus on the guidance issued by the Treasury Department on Dec. 31, 2007, regarding the implementation of the new standards. Sharing their perspectives will be: Anita Soucy of the Treasury Office of Tax Legislative Counsel and one of the principal authors of the recent Treasury guidance; Chris Rizek, a former Treasury official who is an attorney with the law firm of Caplin & Drysdale; and Mike Dolan, a former deputy commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service who is a director in KPMG's Washington national tax practice.

Harry L. (Hank) Gutman, a former chief of staff of the Joint Committee on Taxation and now a principal in KPMG's Washington national tax practice and director of the Tax Governance Institute, will serve as moderator. To attend the Webcast, log on to http://www.taxgovernanceinstitute.com.
