Becker Professional Education awards over $250K in 2016 scholarships

Becker Professional Education, the global professional education, subsidiary of DeVry Education Group, announced on Tuesday the recipients of more than $250,000 in scholarship funds from its annualNewton D. Becker Scholarship Program. As a result of the program, more than 125 CPAs will receivefull or partial scholarships for Becker’s CPA Exam Review.

Entering its fourth year, the scholarship program honors Newton D. Becker, who founded Becker Professional Education in 1957. The program, which has now awarded over $1,000,000 in financial assistance, was created to continue his legacy of helping students and professionals earn the CPA credential and furthering their careers.

This year saw the distribution of 22 full scholarships valued at $3,393 each, as well as 107 half scholarships valued at $1,697 each.

“This year’s recipients have exemplified the integrity and character that our founder demonstrated,” stated Timothy McClinton, vice president of U.S. Accounting at Becker Professional Education. “We are honored to provide each recipient with the resources they need to pursue the CPA credential, as we know it will positively impact their careers and help to further establish them as leaders in their field.”

To qualify for the Program, applicants had to meet the requirements to sit for the CPA Exam at the time of enrollment, demonstrate financial need and, through a personal statement, exhibit traits important to Newton Becker: "high moral character, strong leadership qualities and commitment to community service."

“As a recipient of the Newton D. Becker Scholarship, I am one step closer to working in a small or midsize accounting firm,” said Bryan Batchelor, a Becker scholarship recipient, per a statement. “Eventually, I would like to work as an auditor and apply the skills I learned while studying to become a CPA.”
