Maryland-based accounting firm Weyrich, Cronin & Sorra reached out to the community as part of the Academy of Finance and pulled in new talent.
Christina Davenport, a senior at local Edgewood High School and participant in the program, which offers college preparatory courses in business to high school students, is now interning with the firm.
Davenport joined the Academy of Finance, which is a partnership between Hartford County’s financial services industry and its public schools, her sophomore year. After taking the business and accounting classes, she job shadowed at WC&S before her current paid internship.
WC&S Manager Janet Gomes is a member of the Academy of Finance board.
“It’s important for us to make a positive impact in the future of these bright young people,” Gomes said in a statement. “It’s another way for our firm to be involved in the community and really make a difference.”
Davenport is also president of her Future Business Leaders of America chapter; membership is required for Academy of Finance students.
“The Academy of Finance has not only expanded my knowledge of business and accounting, but has taught me soft skills like how to dress professionally, how to give presentations, and much more,” said Davenport in a statement.
The Academy of Finance is one of four academies sponsored by the National Academy Foundation and is offered at 280 high schools nationwide. The program offers course in accounting, international trade, leadership and technological literacy.
