Employment Practices Insurance for CPA Firms

Camico Mutual Insurance, a CPA-owned professional liability insurer, has begun offering an employment practices liability insurance program to provide CPA firms with defense and indemnity coverage against allegations such as harassment, discrimination and retaliation.

The coverage applies to full-time, part-time and contract workers at the firms, as well as the employees of clients. "It protects the client, too, so the client doesn't have to worry about filing a claim," said Dan Crouch, a spokesman for Camico. "If the CPA firm's employee made some ill-advised remark or did something that caused the client's employee to make an allegation, the insurance would protect against that."

The product is tiered for firms of different sizes. Firms with fewer than 10 employees qualify for a "value program" that provides a limit of $100,000 per claim and $100,000 in aggregate. The standard program provides firms of all sizes with limits of up to $1 million per claim and $2 million in the aggregate. Deductibles range from $5,000 to $25,000.

The insurance is available in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New York Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia and Washington.
