  • H&R Block ended an eight-month search to fill its president and chief executive posts as the tax-prep giant, headquartered here, appointed former McDonald’s Corp. executive Russ Smyth to those positions.Smyth, who formerly served as president of McDonald’s Europe, succeeds Alan Bennett, who has served as interim CEO since November 2007. Smyth was scheduled to assume the Block helm August 1.

Mitchell, who will retire at the end of this year after leading the firm for nearly 35 years. Mitchell will, however, continue as chair until 2010.

  • Accounting firm Blackman Kallick announced the death of former managing partner Dan Fensin, who retired from the firm late last year after running it for 17 years.“We are grateful for all that Dan has done for the community, his profession and our firm,” wrote his successor, Steven Schneider. “He contributed to the personal growth of countless people, myself included. While we are all saddened that he was stricken on the eve of a well-deserved retirement, we can take comfort in knowing that he loved life, and even in his final days he considered himself one of the luckiest people on earth because of family, friends and his life’s work.”

  • Richard Vitale, co-founder of CPA firm Vitale Caturano, resigned after allegations arose that he assisted ticket brokers in getting favorable legislation passed in Massachusetts without first registering as a lobbyist.Vitale reportedly resigned under pressure from the other partners in the firm, who threatened to fire him if he did not step down from the firm he co-founded 30 years ago. He is also accused of loaning a Massachusetts politician $250,000 for a mortgage on a condo at below-market rates.
